The point is, it doesn't really matter.
The media have to fill the papers, the broadcasts etc, it's money.
They will publish anything. Nobody gave them any info, so they are taking something they overheard in the nearest bar and stretching it in order to fill the paper. Rumors can make headlines as good as real info, except they don't have any real info.
What to believe? Well, more or less nothing. Surely not something said by the media, unless they can tell you, where it came from. And even then take it with a grain of salt.
